In Quest of High-Performance Metals
Abstract:
Lighter, yet larger aeroplanes for net-zero emission flights; development of modern renewable energy production and storage; crash-resistant vehicles. These are just a few examples of technological advancements that are only possible to achieve using novel high-performance materials capable of handling harsh working conditions. Developing such materials also minimizes the need for service, maintenance, and re-manufacturing, thus improving the sustainability aspects in grand societal and industrial challenges. This lecture presents the most modern strategies for the design and development of next-generation high-performance metallic materials (alloys). Titel of the lecture:
Casting, dinosaur skulls, cookies and trees: When differences unite into extraordinary structures
Abstract:
Although dinosaur skulls, cookies and trees may seem essentially different from metal castings, they share the common feature of having local variations in their internal material structure. In natural designs, these structural variations are tailored to enable extraordinary performance and damage tolerance.
This lecture presents research that aims to understand the effect of local material variations in metal castings, and enable computational predictions of heterogeneous microstructure-based material behaviour and the performance of castings in use. The research spans over multiple length scales (from macro to nano-scale) as well as different research disciplines, and enables new methodologies to design and optimize industrial castings that, just like natural designs, utilize these local variations to enable extraordinary structures.

Abstract
As the COVID-19 pandemic has progressed in the U.S., "hotspots" have been shifting geographically over time to suburban and rural counties showing a high prevalence of the disease. We analyze daily U.S. county-level variations in COVID-19 confirmed case counts to evaluate the spatial dependence between neighboring counties. We find strong evidence of county-level socioeconomic factors influencing the spatial spread. We show the potential of combining spatial econometric techniques and socioeconomic factors in assessing the spatial effects of COVID-19 among neighboring counties.

ABSTRACT
This study investigates the effects of renewable energy determinants on various renewable energy resources. The empirical results are based on data from 31 Asia-Pacific countries observed from 2000 to 2018. Different diagnostic tests indicate the existence of spatial effects in the renewable energy model. The spatial Durbin model with the time-period and spatial fixed effects was selected for analysis. Scrutinizing empirical studies suggest a lack of theoretical consensus on how renewable energy determinants work. By examining how R&D affects different renewable energy resources, this study attempts to fill the research gap. In addition, the R&D environment is an important factor in determining the effects of GDP and the development of financial markets and institutions. R&D enhancement reduces the impacts of market expansion on hydropower; however, such effects are incremental for solar, wind, bioenergy, and geothermal energy resources. Our study investigates how co-CEOs affect corporate investment under different conditions of ownership and governance. We argue that, while family firms have more parsimonious investment policies than non-family firms, the presence of multiple CEOs raises overinvestment in family firms due to a potential divergence of personal agendas. Our analysis confirms that co-CEOs are conducive of excessive investment activities in family firms. Yet, we find that the positive effect of co-CEOs on family firms’ overinvestment is lower when the firm is subject to strong board monitoring, and higher when the co-CEOs belong to different family branches. Abstract
In this early working paper, we show that perceived economic conditions (sentiment) positively predicts the amount of Google searches on climate-change related topics. The effect is unrelated to business cycle fluctuations and abnormal weather conditions, and is not sensitive to the choice of Google search terms. The results help us understand the drivers of public interest and can inform policy makers and change management strategies.

On May 6, a webinar will be held within WebLearn, Jönköping University, on how to suppress the penetration of molten cast iron into sand mould. The interaction between the high-temperature molten metal and porous mold leads to various types of defects in castings. Studying the origins of penetration defects is important for foundries to avoid the formation of this type of defects.
After attending this webinar you will know more about: * The penetration behavior of molten metal into porous media. * A guideline to suppress the penetration. * How step cone castings work to evaluate penetration processes. * How to use color etching to distinguish the chronology of porosity formation in cast iron.
The webinar is in English only. It is free and open to everyone. Register no later than May 5 here.

Abstract
We propose a new decomposition of aggregate productivity growth that accounts for sectoral efficiency and technology changes as well as capital deepening and provide new evidence on the sources of productivity growth in OECD countries.
Extended Abstract
In this paper, we analyze aggregate labor productivity of developed economies in three periods: (i) years before (2002-2006), (ii) leading to (2006-2009), and (iii) recovery from the global financial crisis (GFC) (2009-2014). First, we decompose aggregate productivity growth into components attributable to intra-sectoral productivity growth effect (within component) and effect of employment share reallocation that is split into the static and dynamic components. We use data for 10 sectors from 26 countries. We confirm that the within component is the key driver of labor productivity growth in good years and in the recovery period. However, we find that it is the major culprit in years leading to GFC. We, therefore, study the factors that affect the within component by employing a non-parametric production frontier approach to conceptually decompose the within component into components attributable to efficiency change, technological change, and capital deepening. The retrenchment in technological progress followed by efficiency losses plays on average the most important role in explaining the collapse of productivity growth in years leading to GFC. Efficiency losses were highest in ICT, manufacturing, construction, utilities, and wholesale. In the recovery period, technological progress has played the largest role in manufacturing, finance, information, and wholesale. In particular, the rate of technological progress in manufacturing has surpassed its level in the pre-crisis period. Productivity is, however, still mired by efficiency losses with exceptions of the agriculture and construction sectors. Capital deepening kept on driving up productivity in all periods. Capital deepening contribution has been especially prominent in the recovery period. To our knowledge, this is the first study that uses sectoral data on capital to analyze the role of sectoral dynamics in terms of efficiency, technology, and capital deepening in aggregate productivity growth. Doing so allows to identify the relative role of these three factors to productivity growth.

Higher seminar: DESIGNING FOR SITUATED KNOWLEDGE IN A WORLD OF CHANGE
Professor Nina Bonderup
In this talk, I shall address a basic question in education: How can students learn to put knowledge, developed in one context, to use in other contexts?
This question poses a major challenge for the educational systems of today because of the following conundrum: in contemporary society, people are required to traverse a range of different settings with different competence demands, and they often have to utilize knowledge across these different settings. However, several strands of research (e.g. practice theory, situated learning, embodied cognition) join in pointing out that knowledge is situated, i.e. acquires form and content from the context in which it is learnt.
Transfer of knowledge across settings is therefore no straightforward matter. It involves transformation of the situatedly learned knowledge so that it fits the new setting. Learning to do so emerges as crucial for students of today, and facilitating transformation becomes a key task for many educational systems.
In the talk, I present research on knowledge transformation, on design principles to support it, and on the implementation of specific learning designs in educational practice. The talk draws on the results of the recent project Designing for situated knowledge in a world of change (2015-2020), financed by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

Abstract
We examine the impact of regulation and policies on green patent generation and evo-lution of renewable energy technologies in the OECD countries. Public and private investment, investment in education, research and development, and environmental regulation are considered. There is considerable variation in innovation systems and investments in renewable energy, and in outcomes. We assess the impact of envi-ronmental stringency and environmental taxes and regulations on renewable energy patents. The considerable heterogeneity requires emphasis on country effects and a separation of general from speci?c green innovation outcomes. We account for country-speci?c innovation factors. A balanced panel of 27 OECD countries is exam-ined between 1990 and 2018. A renewable patent model is estimated by different panel data models and estimation methods. We ?nd considerable sensitivity to model assumptions and inference techniques. The study is suggestive, however, of some renewable energy approaches for achievement of OECD environmental goals.

WebLearn: Design for casting - a foundryman?s perspective
An efficient product realization process for castings, from design idea to finished product, requires a good interaction between the designer and the manufacturer. The designer needs to have a good insight into the casting process and understand the possibilities and limitations that the process puts on geometrical design.
In this webinar, we will provide a foundryman's perspective on the topic “design for casting”. We will follow different steps that an iron foundry takes to evaluate a customer’s design proposal and highlight some points that are important to consider as a designer in order to prepare a design that is suitable for casting, but also reduces the economic cost as well as the environmental impact. We will also discuss tools such as 3D printed sand moulds and simulations can support the design process and make it more efficient. After the webinar there will be a +30 min group discussion and networking.
After attending this webinar you will know more about: * How the different aspects of the geometrical design affect the casting process and the work in the foundry * How a foundry can support the design process for cast components * How small changes in the design can have a large impact on the cost and environmental impact of a casting
This webinar is specifically useful for designers, purchasers and suppliers of cast components, but also everyone with an interest in product realization and casting in general.

Welcome to Paola Sartoretto's associate professor lecture!
Titel: Communication of the Oppressed - conditions and possibilities for resistant appropriations of media technologies
How do marginalised groups use media as tools for political action? What is the importance of communication for social mobilsation under conditions of oppression? In this lecture I reflect on my ten years of research on activist media and communication within social movements to understand the conditions through which communicative processes can be a way to resist against oppression.
The work of Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, internationally known for his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, foregrounds the discussion in which I establish connections between education, communication and political action. Freire argued that learning to ‘write the word’ is essential to ‘write the world’ and overcome oppression. I argue that in hyper-mediated and unequal contemporary societies writing the world is a communicative process that includes, but is not limited to, resistant appropriations of media technologies by marginalised groups.

EU Wants JU!
Webinars on how to (and why you ought to!) sign up as an expert reviewer for the Horizon Europe Programme.
As part of the strategy to increase and secure the volume of external research funding from the framework programme Horizon Europe, JU will have to build awareness, knowledge, and deeper understanding of the programme – as well as proposal-writing skills - among JU researchers.
Acting as experts and evaluators of Horizon Europe proposals in our research fields is a very efficient way to build an understanding of the evaluator’s logic, how to achieve high scores, and thus spread greater proposal-writing skills among JU researchers.
These 2 webinars each cover:
· Practical information on how to sign up as an evaluator in the Funding and Tenders platform.
· Information on what it means to be an expert evaluator: Work-load, remuneration etc.
· The added value of a) understanding the policy background and the evaluator’s logic, and b) new insights and greater proposal-writing skills for Horizon calls (and for national funding calls as well).
Zoom link to the webinar: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/4636101075
The webinars are held in English. No registration demanded!
