Stress is the body's way of responding in order to cope with the emotional and physical strain and challenges with which we are faced throughout our lifetime. Stress heightens ones physical performance based on what the brain anticipates. Mankind has always experienced stress. Originally, stress was a reaction essential to our very survival, but today it no longer has the same significance for our existence.
There are numerous different factors that can trigger stress. Physiological factors can range from alcohol consumption to environmental toxins to physical injuries. Psychological factors could be mobbing, the death of someone close or a lack of appreciation.
It is possible to experience "good" or positive stress as well as negative stress, however both types of stress will eventually become harmful to ones health if allowed to persist. Positive stress is created when we exercise or when we are involved with an exciting and challenging project. Negative stress can occur when there is a feeling of helplessness and inability to cope with a study situation or a relationship.
If you would like to get rid of stress you must first remove the underlying causes and sometimes it is best to seek professional help from a counsellor or psychologist. As an individual, you should also consider what exactly causes you stress, for example is it worry over work, your family or your leisure time. Go through the things that are positive in your life, things that you enjoy doing and people you enjoy socializing with. Try to spend more time doing positive things and less time doing things that cause you stress. This will not necessarily solve all your problems, but it may just be the start to a healthier lifestyle.
