JIBS started its collaboration with Addis Ababa University (AAU) in 2011. The first two students from the first batch of PhD students in economics were graduated at AAU on April 18th 2016.

Dr. Hailu Elias and Dr Atlaw Alemu was when graduating the two first PhD candidates graduated from the department of economics at the College of Business and Economics at Addis Ababa University ever. Dr Hailu was supervised by Prof. Pär Sjölander (main) and Dr Kristoffer Månsson and Dr Assefa Admassie as deputy supervisors. Dr Atlaw was supervised by Prof. Börje Johansson (main) and Prof Ghazi Shukur, Dr Tassew Woldehanna  and Dr Kristoffer Månsson as deputies. The title of Dr Hailu´s thesis is "Welfare Implications of Credit Constraints and Climate Change Adaptation Strategies on Ethiopian Farm Households Pdf, 2.7 MB." and the title of Dr Atlaw thesis is  "Industrialization of economies with low manufacturing base Pdf, 1.1 MB.".
